How to Reinstate a Salvage Title in Mississippi

A wrecked vehicle that has been totaled is issued a salvage title in the state of Mississippi. Depending on the extent of damage that has occurred to the vehicle, an individual can repair the vehicle and have a clear or rebuilt title issued. The vehicle will have to pass an inspection, and the type of title that will be reissued depends on the type of salvage title originally assigned to the car and the number and type of parts that have been repaired or replaced.

Things You Will Need

  • Salvage title
  • ID
  • Repair test
  • the State Inspectorate
  • Determine why the vehicle was destroyed. This will play an important role in how your vehicle can be re-titled and whether it will have additional damaged vehicle labels stamped on it by the Mississippi Tax Commission after inspection. The only vehicles eligible for a completely clear title are those that were involved in an accident and needed less than a large part replaced and four minor parts or five or fewer minor components replaced. Rebuilding title is issued when the vehicle has had one of the major and five minor parts replaced, six or more minor parts replaced, or two or more of the major parts replaced.
The main components labeled by the state of Mississippi are the ‘hood or rear firewall clip, roof panel, front-end frame assembly, or any portion of the roof panel itself when installed separately from motor or motor.’
  • Replace all the parts in the vehicle that need to be replaced. Save all documentation related to the parts and their replacement. Take pictures of the vehicle before and after the damage, documenting the repair process. Images must be included with the inspection request.
  • File an Application for Rescue Vehicle Inspection in the state of Mississippi. Along with the application, you will need to provide the vehicle’s salvage title, notarized bills of sale for all major components used in the repair and receipts and bills for minor components. If a part of the vehicle was used for the repair, you must include the information about the vehicle. The vehicle will have a scheduled inspection with the Department of Public Safety.
  • Receive the Vehicle Inspection Form Completion from the safety inspector when the vehicle passes the inspection, then apply for a new title with the state of Mississippi. The car will be issued a rebuilt or clear title, depending on the circumstances and the parts replaced.
