From sugar cane to eco-friendly plates and bowls

What is bagasse? How is it used in the production of plates and bowls?
Bagasse is the fibrous material that remains after extracting juice from sugarcane stalks. The fibrous part usually becomes a waste product after the liquid has been separated. Companies come in, making practical and environmentally friendly products by recycling or using bagasse that generally end up in a landfill.
Manufacturing companies take the bagasse and turn the material into valuable products. In this way, large quantities of bagasse can be saved from landfills.
To make compostable plates and bowls from bagasse, the bagasse must first be recycled. The raw material arrives at the production site as wet pulp. The wet pulp is pressed in a whipping machine and then processed into dry paperboard. There are two types of bagasse: damp and dry board. The wet board is produced in fewer steps than the dry board, but the damp board contains impurities. Manufacturing companies use unique processes to remove the contaminants and convert the damp pulp into dry pulp sheets to produce a higher quality product.
After the wet pulp is made into a dry pulpboard, it is mixed with oil and impregnating agents in the pulper to give the product strength. After mixing, the mixture is fed into a conditioning tank and then into a forming machine. The forming machine immediately presses the mixture into the shape of bowls and plates, producing up to six vessels and nine bowls at a time.
The finished bowls and plates are then tested for oil and water resistance. Bowls and plates that pass these tests are packaged and sold to consumers. These pre-packaged dishes contain plates and bowls that can be used at picnics, coffee shops, and other places where disposable tableware is needed—environmentally friendly and safe dinnerware.
The plates and bowls are 100% biodegradable and completely decompose in 90 days in a composting plant.
