This new release from Hungaroton features two late compositions by Alessandro Scarlatti.

The main work is the Stabat mater but it is prefaced by a Sonata in C minor for flute and strings. It’s one of seven scored for transverse flute, violins in two parts, cello and continuo which date fromthe year in which Scarlatti died. Unlike so much of his vocal music this sonata, at least, is conservative in outlook with few noteworthy features.

The flautist, Pal Nemeth, gives a somewhat routine performance though to be fair, the same criticism might be levelled at Scarlatti; crisper articulation and tidier ensemble would have contributed toward making out a stronger case for the piece but, nevertheless, it mkaes an interesting prelude to the Statbat mater which also begins and concludes in C minor.

Stabat Mater (Scarlatti, Alessandro)

Scarlatti composed his Stabat mater for the Neapolitan brotherhood of the Cavalieri della Vergine dei dolori. He scored it for two solo voices, soprano and mezzo-soprano with an orchestra of strings. The Stabat mater text prevented him from adopting the ‘recitative-aria’ patter of the cantata and so he alternated solo and duet numbers almost throughout, introducing two short arioso sections towards the conclusion of the work. Pergolesi, incidentally, composed his Stabat mater mager the same Neapolitan brotherhood and must certainly have takne Scarlatti’s setting as his model since the similarities are too numerous and too close to be merely accidental.

Scarlatti’s work falls into four sections each of which reflects its own emotional response to the substance of the Latin text. The soloists, Maria Zadori and Paul Esswood, are well matched in the duets and provide effective contrast with each other in the solo arias. Zadori has a light, attractive-sounding voice, a strong technique and a good ear; her intonation is secure and she has a firm grasp of scarlarti.

Esswood is on his best form here, conveying the strong sense of pathos implicit in both music and text.

The Capella Savaria is an ensemble of period instruments which has not yet reached the degree of technical mateg achieved by our finest groups nearer home; but, by the sound of things, it will not be long in catching up! It’s a spirited chamber group which gives an attractive account of the music as well as providing sympathetic accompaniment to the soloists.

The freshness of their approach is further enhanced by a pleasant acoustic, effectively captured in both LP and CD formats. My pressings were excellent and the enclosed documentation includes the Stabat mater text in five languages LP and four CD ; English is common to both.
