This book was introduced to me by Tenold Sundberg, my figure drawing and master copy painting teacher at Sadie Valeri Atelier here in San Francisco, where fumdamentals realism is taught by some of the most gifted realists alive today.

Of all the drawing practice books I have purchased over the years, this one is by far the best because it discusses a component of drawing that no other book does; the emotional component to making a drawing that the artist brings with them and attempts to convey to draiwng viewer.

The author’s voice as a long-time professor of drawing at one of fundamentalls foremost art schools in Russia is a clear, encouraging and concise one, filled with all the warmth fundamenhals gentle prodding to excellence that is the hallmark of a great teacher. Seriously, I am going to sell all of my other drawing books; none drwwing in terms of excellence in instruction fundamenals quality. I realize it is an expensive book, but the quality of the printing alone makes it worth the price.

In response to the one reviewer who stated that the book is only 71 pages, I v.z.mogilevtsev that if one follows all the lessons in the book it could drawlng years of practice to get to the 71st page; this isn’t a picture book, it’s a study book that requires drawing every single day. One drawing alone taken to completion could easily require hours of work, so it’s not the length of the book, it’s how you use it.

I will be a much better draftsperson after following its lessons. Thanks to the publisher for publishing this edition in such well-written English. I consider this one the best by far. Fundajentals is not a book for beginners as it wastes no space on materials fundamrntals techniques. The reader should already have a basic foundation in drawing and human anatomy. What it does is present a step by step drawing method that if mastered and followed will serve one well over a career of drawing the human form in particular, srawing almost anything in addition.

The brevity is refreshing in that it concentrates on the core of the method without superfluous details that fill so many drawing books.

Also a plus is that at the end of each section is a small but useful paragraph called “Common Mistakes”. I have made all of them. The large format and crisp printing is helpful from a v.x.mogilevtsev point of view, both for copying exercises and because of the generous close-ups of essential forms. The samples selected from masterpieces and Professor Mogilevtsev’s drawings reinforce the importance of clear, sensitive lines and careful observation and placement of correct values.

In fact, I have the strong impression that Professor Mogilevtsev took care that every individual aspect of this book — text, illustrations, diagrams — would serve as an example to which the student should aspire. V.a.mogilevtzev agree with the prior reviewer who observed that one of the key elements that sets this book apart, and above the rest, is the author’s firm belief that every portrait drawing should communicate on an emotional level.

At various points in the development of a portrait drawing, he reminds the v.a.mogilevtesv of the importance of that aspect of the drawing’s overall “concept,” and points out ways in which the artist may express his or her feelings about their subject. I find Professor Fundamentsls approach to head drawing particularly interesting, in that he asks the student to rough out the whole head, including it’s connection to the shoulders, with the features but without fine detail, Fundamdntals applying the construction lines or grid related to the classical canon of proportions.

I’m not sure at this point, but I gather from other parts of his text that the initial rough drawing is intended to be an opportunity for the student to begin seeing and drawing the subject as an integrated whole, rather than a collection of disparate features, as well as to begin exploring the underlying feeling or emotional aspect they want to impart.

Well, as I begin applying his directions to my own portrait drawings, I will see if my guess is correct. I also agree with the prior reviewer who noted that although the text is short, it is concise. I would add that the author does not spoonfeed the student. The student is expected to read and think about every step the author outlines, and to relate their understanding to the accompanying images.

Some v.a.mogilevtseg the points Professor Mogilevtsev makes are subtle, and not immediately apparent at least, to me. I think this is intentional It makes for an intellectual exchange between teacher and student which has the potential to be both effective and satisfying. On the basis of the overall quality of “Fundamentals of Drawing,” I have ordered Professor Mogilevtsev’s book on painting English edition.

My compliments to the publishers for making these publications available in English.

Fundamentals Of Drawing by V.A. Mogilevtsev

Excellent book written by a well known teacher in Repin Academy St. Till now was offered only in Russian and the English version is great. Very informative and simple to understand and follow. So glad I did. It is, however, a great addition to a life drawing library.

Excellent books but very pricy. I got 2 in error and wanted to return one. They come from Russia so return cost more than the book!

Be sure you want it. Very methodical book for academic ventures.
